Being a Witch in the Modern World

So, we know what witches are and most of us know how they were viewed in the past, but what does it mean to be a witch in today's modern world?

Let's first of all think about how society as a whole views other cultures. In a way, the world has become much more welcoming but there is still a reserved part that lacks compassion for every single person out there. That being said, witches, at least the ones similar to me that live in a very modernized society, are usually not persecuted like they were in Salam and honestly, thank the world for that.

Most of the time, the reason we aren't exactly looked at in a good light are reasons due to modern culture in movies, books, and television but it has gotten better. Look at all the love witches in these contexts receive.

And although being a witch in the modern age isn't exactly being Harry Potter, most of us don't mind how those books and movies depict such topics.

How does how the world view witches effect how I practice?

Now, I want to believe that what I do in my practicing life doesn't particularly harm anyone so I don't feel judged about it but that isn't how the world works now is it? I feel judged about my practices. A LOT. But that isn't going to stop me from being happy in what I do.

When people first find out I practice, there are two ways the conversation usually goes.

Good. Or bad.

Most of the time it's a more positive reaction with people just finding me and my practice a tad bit fascinating and just wanting to know if I "cast spells" or "summon demons", which I could go into those answers quite deeply but those probably deserve a post of their own.

The other end of the spectrum is not as positive and lighthearted. Yes, I have lost some of my closest friends because they disagree with what I believe and that does really hurt but there isn't much I can do and all in all, I believe that as a witch, we should always try to focus our energy on the positive so I let people come and go as they please in order to focus on what's best for me and my positivity.

We have modernized with the world.

Witches aren't in hiding anymore. Although I like to keep my craft and practice more private than others, I have come to realize that I don't have to hide. That being said, I do prefer solitary practice but that doesn't mean I don't seek out others who share my beliefs. I'm even in Facebook groups with other witches where we can share our practices and interests with each other using social media!

There are a surprising number of witches out here and one way we communicate is through technology. Yes, I do have witch friends that I text for spell information and candle advice. We have modernized with the world so much so that there is even a classification of witchery that is called a Tech Witch where, believe it or not, their practice is through using technology. These witches are fairly easy to find too, as they are running websites, blogs, vlogs, and some even Skype with other witches to practice together.

As the world grows and our witchy ways improve, we just want you to know that overall, we are just like you, whether you are a witch or not and most of the time, we mean well. We have come a long way in out culture and how we are accepted and that is the great thing about being a witch in the modern world.

Kael, I appreciate that you were able to better help me find an understanding that not all witches are how they seem to be in the movies. It is also good to know that most witches are wanting whats good or positive for their life instead considering the negativity.

As a closet witch, I love this! I barely tell anyone my practices either except for some online friends! It is hard to open up to others about such subjects. You give such perspective, I like it!
